HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Picking up their second conference win in as many league matches, the Limestone College men's wrestling team took home a 24-12 win over the Cobras of Coker University on Thursday, January 23. The Saints were able to take down Emmanuel last week and then after their win over the Cobras tonight the Saints move to 2-0 in the league on the season.

The match featured many bouts against regionally ranked opponents starting with the first bout of the night featuring second-ranked senior James Sass (Summerville, S.C.) going up against sixth-ranked John Watts.  The two battled back and forth until Sass was able to control the match in the late goings to secure the 12-7 decision and give the Saints the early 3-0 lead.

The Cobras were able to steal an upset at 133 lbs. before the Saints got back on track at 141 lbs. as third-ranked sophomore John Burger (New Milford, N.J.) turned in a 12-1 major decision over fifth-ranked Zach Van last to give the Saints the 7-3 lead.  Junior Phil Ruiz (East Rutherford, N.J.) followed that up with a win over sixth-ranked Matthew Kieta by way of a 5-4 decision to extend the Limestone lead out to 10-3.

Coker would pick up another win at 157 lbs., but the Saints would rebound with wins in the next two weight classes.  Sophomore Garrett Beam (Asbury, N.J.), the top-ranked wrestler at 165 lbs. in the region and ninth in the country, would turn in a 17-0 tech-fall in the second period to bring the Saints lead back to 15-6.  Sophomore Hayden Prince (Goose Creek, S.C.), the second-ranked wrestler at 174 lbs., would also pick up a win, though this time by major decision over third-ranked Jhavon Innocent.

The Cobras were able to take two of the final three bouts of the evening, but those wins were sandwiched around a dominating performance from senior Matt Rudy (Summerville, S.C.), who is currently ranked third in the country, as he posted a 17-0 tech-fall at 197 lbs. Coker took the victory at 285 lbs. but it would make no difference in the final score as the Saints took the 24-12 victory.

Next up for the Saints is a trip down I-26 to Newberry College to face the Wolves on Monday, January 27. The Saints will look to pick up the programs first ever win against the conference foe when the match kicks off at 7 p.m.
