Stephenson and Hillcrest looking to repeat.
1) Hillcrest High School
The defending state champions are looking to repeat this year as their lineup has already gotten stronger in the off-season adding one state qualifier and another state placer to the team. With the addition of these wrestlers, the lineup will be returning eight state qualifiers. Hillcrest will be led by All-American, Walker Stephenson, at 182 pounds. Look for Hillcrest to make another run for a state title this season.
2) Byrnes High School
Last season Byrnes was looking like the team to beat all season. Byrnes went on to lose in the upper state finals to the eventual state champion, Hillcrest High School, by a score of 28 to 24. This year Byrnes will be led by their two young state champions, David Hunsberger and Christopher Compton. Compton, a junior this season, will be looking for his third consecutive individual state title. David Hunsberger, a sophomore, will be looking to duplicate his freshman season where he compiled a perfect record of 50-0 and capped the season off with a state title. Byrnes will be returning 6 previous state qualifiers.
3) Chapin High School
Last season Chapin bounced out early in the playoffs by losing a close one to Cane Bay High School 37 to 33. Chapin will be returning 4 state qualifiers from last year. They will be led by their senior, Shawn Haile, last season’s state champion at 182 lbs. They will also be helped by junior Josh Green who placed third last season at 138 lbs. Haile, a three time qualifier and two time placer, will be looking to repeat as a senior this year.
